What if Always Helping Our Kids is Hurting Them?

Saturday, May 25 | 10:00am - 11:00am AT

Presented by
Lenore Skenazy

The media labeled Lenore "America’s Worst Mom" when she let her 9-year-old ride the subway alone. She scoffed (after crying) and went on to found Free-Range Kids: the book, blog, and movement declaring our kids are smarter and safer than our culture gives them credit for. Now she’s the head of Let Grow, the national non-profit making it easy, normal, and legal to give kids back some old-fashioned independence.

In this laugh-till-your-sides-hurt talk (really!), Lenore looks at how we got so afraid for our kids – their health, grades, friends, future, snacks. Where does all this anxiety come from and what is it doing to our kids -- and us. Lenore comes bearing good news and will share the power of trust, as well as the two fast, easy, and now scientifically validated actions we can take to make us all breathe a little easier.

  • List three reasons parents have become too afraid to let their kids do almost anything unsupervised.

  • Explain the way free play builds children’s social-emotional skills better than adult-organized activities.

  • Provide parents with a two-step plan for giving their children more age-appropriate independence.

  • Detect the link between fearmongering media and parental overprotection.
