Ancient Wisdom, Modern Science: The Practice of Yoga

How do we rise above that which we cannot control and move beyond difficult circumstances? How can movement on a rectangular mat cultivate that? What starts out for many as exercise often becomes a portal to something much more significant through the power of breath and mindful movement. In this workshop we take a deeper look at this ancient practice we call yoga. We will explore its origins, eight petals and the science that now supports mindfulness-based practices as modalities for healing. You’ll also be guided through a thoughtfully curated yoga practice for all levels and reflect upon ways to integrate yoga into your daily life as a tool for your own resiliency.

Tanu Sharma

Dr. Tanu Sharma is a family physician working as a Hospitalist and Medical Education Lead at CAMH in Toronto. She is a 200-hour certified yoga instructor trained in Bali who has experience practicing and teaching in Canada, Costa Rica, Panama and Indonesia. She aims to share the ancient art of yoga as a tool for the healing, empowerment and liberation of women in medicine.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this workshop participants will be able to:

  • State the history and evolution of yoga including its eight key components.

  • Identify the evidence-based neurocognitive changes that result from a mindfulness based practice.

  • Explain how yoga can be used as a tool to complement the treatment of chronic disease states and mental health conditions.

  • Demonstrate and cultivate your own practice in yoga and mindfulness.

  • Participate in a guided yoga class.
