I’m Not Okay, and That’s More than Okay: Resilience, Mental Health and the Power of Going First

Saturday, May 25 | 1:00pm - 2:00pm ADT

Presented by Dr. Shelly Dev

In a July 2019 Lancet editorial, the ominous title warned: Physician Burnout: A Global Crisis. The global epidemic of our burnout was soon to be engulfed by the global pandemic just 8 months later.  While we happily did away with the masks and social distancing, our despair and loss of meaning in work in this, the pandemic aftermath, has only depended since the Lancet’s declaration of our crisis.  The aim of this talk is to dismantle our problematic and damaging medical-cultural notions of resilience and success in favour of a healthier, kinder, more community-engaged one, to achieve true and lasting well-being. With some pearls from a years-long stint in therapy along the way.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this activity, participants will be able to:

  • Describe resilience as a psychological construct;

  • Examine the ways in which medical culture defines “resilience” and “success” and how that impacts the worker’s well-being;

  • Incorporate real-time mindfulness and a “Go First” mindset for personal and cultural progress.
